Bureau of the Public Debt

Last reviewed: September 2, 2026

The Bureau of the Public Debt was a U.S. Treasury bureau responsible for borrowing money for the federal government and accounting for the public debt. It no longer exists under that name.

What replaced it?

In 2012, the Bureau of the Public Debt and the Financial Management Service were consolidated into the Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Older financial documents may still use the former name, which is why the term remains useful to understand.

What the current bureau does

The Bureau of the Fiscal Service manages federal borrowing and debt-related operations, including marketable Treasury securities and government accounts.

Why this matters when researching old sources

If you see “Bureau of the Public Debt” in an older bond, government or debt-market reference, do not assume it is a separate current agency. The modern organization is the Bureau of the Fiscal Service.
