IPO

Initial Public Offering — the first time a private company sells shares to the public on a stock exchange. Before an IPO, a company is owned by its founders, employees, and private investors; afterward, anyone can buy shares. Companies go public to raise capital for growth, and IPOs are often volatile in their first days or weeks of trading as the market determines a fair price.
