Inflation rate

The percentage increase in the price of goods and services over time, usually measured annually. It's most commonly tracked using the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Inflation erodes purchasing power — at 3% annual inflation, something costing $100 today costs about $103 next year — which is why investors often seek returns that outpace it.
