Subordinated

Describes a debt obligation that ranks below other, "senior" debts in priority of repayment if a borrower defaults or goes bankrupt. Subordinated debt holders get paid only after senior debt holders are made whole, which is riskier — and why subordinated bonds typically offer higher yields to compensate investors for that added risk.
