Bid/ask spread

The difference between the highest price a buyer is willing to pay (the bid) and the lowest price a seller will accept (the ask). A narrow spread usually signals a liquid, actively traded security; a wide spread signals lower liquidity or higher risk. The spread is one of the ways market makers earn a profit for providing liquidity.
