Depositary receipt
A certificate issued by a bank that represents shares in a foreign company, allowing that company's stock to be bought and sold on a domestic exchange in domestic currency. The most common form in the U.S. is the American Depositary Receipt (ADR) — for example, a European or Asian company's ADR lets U.S. investors buy its stock in dollars through a normal U.S. brokerage account, without dealing with a foreign exchange directly.
